Organic Synthesis, Fourth Edition, provides a reaction-based approach to this important branch of organic chemistry. Updated and accessible, this eagerly-awaited revision offers a comprehensive foundation for graduate students coming from disparate backgrounds and knowledge levels, to provide them with critical working knowledge of basic reactions, stereochemistry and conformational principles. In the Fourth Edition, the organization of the book has been improved to better serve students and professors and accommodate important updates in the field. The first chapter reviews basic retrosynthesis, conformations and stereochemistry. The next three chapters provide an introduction to and a review of functional group exchange reactions; these are followed by chapters reviewing protecting groups, oxidation and reduction reactions and reagents, hydroboration, selectivity in reactions. A separate chapter discusses strategies of organic synthesis, and he book then delves deeper in teaching the reactions required to actually complete a synthesis. Carbon-carbon bond formation reactions using both nucleophilic carbon reactions are presented, and then electrophilic carbon reactions, followed by pericyclic reactions and radical and carbene reactions. The important organometallic reactions have been consolidated into a single chapter. Finally, the chapter on combinatorial chemistry has been removed from the strategies chapter and placed in a separate chapter, along with valuable and forward-looking content on green organic chemistry, process chemistry and continuous flow chemistry.

Throughout the text, Organic Synthesis, Fourth Edition utilizes Spartan-generated molecular models, class tested content, and useful pedagogical features to aid student study and retention, including Chapter Review Questions, and Homework Problems. Excellent book, but this book requires extensive number of slides to explain all the principles discussed in the book. I have read that the author provides PowerPoint slides, but I am yet to find them. I have been trying for over a month but I will keep trying. If I cannot obtain the slides, I might have to stop recommending this book because this book is not an easy book for students to read and understand.

Este texto es un manual excelente de química orgánica avanzada, con énfasis en metodologías sintéticas. Conocía y había utilizado la primera edición en cursos de química orgánica en el último curso de Grado, así como en los últimos cursos de la ya extinguida Licenciatura en Química. También lo he empleado en cursos de Posgrado. El autor es un experto en la disciplina, como no podía ser de otro modo en quien continua la edición del famoso "March's Advanced Organic Chemistry" (del fallecido Jerry March). La presente monografía comienza con principios de estereoquímica y ácidos y bases (otro de los temas favoritos de Smith), que se emplean como herramientas y plataformas para ir accediendo gradualmente al resto de los tópicos, como son interconversiones de grupos funcionales, y las rutas sintéticas que emplean procesos polares o concertados, incluyendo reactivos organometálicos. En mi opinión, el tema final de química combinatorial ya no parece tan necesario como lo fue en su momento. En cambio, sí podrían ser más útiles otras estrategias y métodos en el diseño de fármacos y compuestos modelos; así como nuevas herramientas en química sostenible. Sería necesario un manual con soluciones y/o una guía de estudio para los alumnos. Pese a las últimas críticas, un gran texto que merece recomendarse sin reservas.
